Amelia borough, rooked on a rocky hill, is surrounded by crowded forests and from the Tiber river stream. Its ancient and impressive city walls were built in the Sixth Century BC. During the Roman Empire, Amelia had an important role, also because of its strategic position. The town, located in southern Umbria, still has in intself many Roman-Medieval traces, as well as important natural elements. In fact, the surrounding area, especially towards Narni, shows unique elements, such as the Rio Grande river, the Grotta delle Fate (a cave) and the three parks: Mattia, Cavallerizza and San Silvestro parks. |

Cultural Itineraries - Roman Tanks Visit
The underground rooms of Piazza Matteotti keep an unexpected surprise for those who visit Amelia. Ten connected large underground halls dated back in the ancient Roman past. These tanks, dated First Century BC, were used to collect and keep the raining water. Their uncommon size, 4.400 cubic mts, depends on the past dangerous Amelia lacks of water. In fact, Amelia water sources are located out of the downtown and too far during war or famine periods. The structure efficiency has been useful to Amelia and used by the citizens until 1945. Today, these tanks, perfectly kept and preserved, allow visitors to be seen and studied, as well as the whole water system projected by the Roman genious to manage water.
