The Coast
The main city of this area is Grosseto, built during the Middle Age. The best beaches around here are Capalbio and Ansedonia. Capalbio is a wonderful medieval town, next to the Tyrrenian coasts, in southern Tuscany. Its natural environment offers spectacular landscapes with lots of green hills and wild beaches and forests. A nice place to visit in town is La Rocca, L shape building with a big rook and a closed courtyard, dated back Fifteenth Century, when Siena dominated the area. Inside you can still admire the ancient Giacomo Puccini piano. In Capalbio downtown you can see the Porta Senese, the Camminamento di Ronda, the Pieve di San Nicola. Going down towards the sea visits to the Tarocchi Garden, the Uccellina WWF Natural Park and the Burano Natural Oasis are worth it.
Along the coast is also the famous Orbetello swamp, between Feniglia and Giannella areas. Orbetello downtown offers suggestive spots and churches to visit, such as S. Maria Assunta church and the Spanish Mill. A nice town to visit is Talamone, with its charming medieval downtown. From Ansedonia you can see the whole coast where water is clean and beaches are wide. Near Orbetello is also nice to visit Porto Santo Stefano with its Aquarium and Porto Ercole, from where visitors can take a ferry to get to the Giglio Island. This Island is a real natural paradise, with beaches that still keep the original natural environment. A little north way we find Alberese (from where Maremma Natural Park excursions start), with San Rabano abbey, Grosseto, Marina di Grosseto and the pretty Castiglion della Pescaia (with an Eighteenth Century Red House). In the big Grosseto province, another place to visit is Seggiano, with its beautiful open air garden, designed by Daniel Spoerri (info +39.0564.950457 - Entrance € 7,00).
Ansedonia: high on a rock, with many narrow and charmimng streets right above the sea, today it is a very nice and suggestive town to visit. Some great places to see are: the so called "spacco della Regina", among the rocks, the Roman city of Cosa, founded in 273 a.C. Cosa offers to its visitors many spectacular things to see, such as the Great Capitolum ruins, a three cells temple, the Forum area, for commercial and political purposes, the Basilique, the Comitium, another Temple. Moreover: the ancient San Pancrazio and San Biagio rooks, the Etruscan Tagliata, the great Roman Villa Marittima, the Cosano harbour, built between the Second and the First Century B.C. This archaeological area is still recovering many ruins. Another great thing to see is the Antiquarium inside the arcaheological park, where are also ancient olive trees.
The Roman Villa of Settefinestre, dated back year 40 a.C. is an interesting site where visitors can admire an ancient Roman area. Then, the Emperor villa on the Giannutri Island, the Etruscan ruins of Roselle and those in Vetulonia (Castiglion della Pescaia). In Roselle there is also a Roman amphiteatre, while in Vetulonia is the Diavolino Tumb.
The Giardino dei Tarocchi, located near Capalbio, is a very particular attraction. Started in 1979 by the French N.de S.Phalle, the garden has big 12 to 15 mts high sculptures, covered with mosaics, mirrors, ceramics and glass that reproduce with their shapes the 22 Tarocchi cards. Info > Open from May 13th to October 20th. Entrance: from 2,30 PM to 7,30 PM, Euro 10,30 (discounted ticket Euro 6,00) - Phone: +39.0564.895188
The Etruscan land
The inland of Maremma is a territory that is definitely worth to visit, for its beautiful artistic and natural scenarios. Soon after Magliano in Toscana, the inland changes into green hills fich of vineyards, such as around Scansano: a small town which is famous for its Morellino di Scansano red wine. Near there, there are the Petreto convent, the Ghiaccio Forte archaeologial area (Third Century B.C.), teh Roman Villa and the Montorgiali and Montepò castles. An interesting visit can be done at the MUSEO DELLA VITE, right in downtown. Near there, is the town of Pitigliano, also called the "Small Jerusalem". This small and cute town (313 mts on the sea level) offers great views and it is right on a tufa rock, between the two Lente and Meleta rivers. Some things to see are the underground Pitigliano, with its underground cellars, and the medieval Orsini Fortress, restored during the Sixteenth Century, where are a Temple, a Sinagogue with a Jewish Cemetery and the Medici Aqueduct. Another town to visit is Manciano.
Manciano, with its Aldobrandi Castle, the Roccaccia di Montauto and the medieval Castle of Sciarpena. A nice stop is worth at Marsiliana, with its Etruscan ruins, as well as the Etruscan towns of Sovana and Roselle. Sovana also keeps medieval traces in its downtown, with the Duomo and the archaeological area. Saturnia is a famous natural spa centre and for its natural Gorello water falls. Not far are the towns of S.Quirico and Sorano (dominated by the Masso Leopoldino and from the Orsini Fortress).
Saturnia (Gorello water falls). It is told that God Saturn, with a lighting, made the water source from a volcano. This water, considered sacred by the Etruscans, also were used by the Romans. The whole area is located next to the ancient volcano crater in a spectacular natural environment.
Mount Amiata
This territory comprehends the whole valley and all those towns near Mount Amiata. In this area many places are interesting to be visited, such as Abbadia San Salvatore, Arcidosso, Semproniano and Castell'Azzara. Some nice locations around these towns are the Archaeological Park, Rocca Silvana, the Mineral Park of Mount Amiata, the Sassocolato cave and the Villa Sforzesca. The Villa was requested by Cardinal Alessandro Sforza and it was finished in 1576 along the famous Via Francigena. From a natural point of view, it is very interesting visiting the Mount Amiata Animal Park, a 5 square kms surface where it is possible to see many typical animal species.
