The name Orvieto comes from the original Urbs Vetus (Old Town). The city had its best period during the Middle Age, as one of the most powerful religious and military area. A demonstration of this fact is the Albornoz Fortress, built by Cardinal Albornoz during the time Orvieto had been a Pope's city. Today it is a unique city and its tufa rock hosts many artistical and archaeologial treasures, as follows.

The Cava Well

The Well is completely dug in the tufa rock which is the base of Orvieto downtown. This well is 36 mts deep and at its bottom it has a water source. The structure is made of 2 parts put together: the first part, which is the bigger one, has a circular section and an average diameter of 3,40 mts. The second one, the smaller, has a rectangular section (60x80 cms) and represents the typical Etruscan "pedarole", dug signs on the well's walls to help Etruscans climbing it up and down.
At 30 mts deep, a 170 cms high-20 mts long tunnel begins; its floor, almost completely covered of mud and clay, has a deep plough on its left side. It was used to make the well's water flow.
Openings: 8 AM to 8 PM
Monday closed (except during holidays)
[other times of the day only on previous request]
