Sport and natural Itineraries - The Tane del Diavolo

With this suggestive name, Tane del Diavolo is a well known caves complex whose entrances are open over the high limestone walls, located in the Parrano town valley. The limestone is deeply cut by the Bagno ditch, dug by its water which made several "tentacles" and created natural rooms, caves, water falls and bridges. The ditch, which finds its source in Montegiove, goes towards the Chiani river right after coming out from the limestone walls and the large valley. At its basis sulfurous water gives the lakes a surprising light blue colour. The eight caves are at different height level on both the ditch banks. They are very difficult to visit, in some case just trained people with ropes can get an access there. The most famous caves have their entrance on their right walls, right close to natural stone arches. They are well known by speleologists as: Main Inferior Cave (Lippi Boncampi); - main Superior Cave (Lippi Boncampi) - Faggio Cave. They have a long and charming underground development which turns into a real labyrinth near the Faggio Cave.

Bagno Ditch
It is a long and narrow ditch, dug by water in ancient stones, when they were already out of the ancient sea. From geological maps, we can notice that the Bagno Ditch was dug in ancient stones (Miliocene period), but it is also close to recent volcanic areas (last eruptions are dated back to around 40.000 years ago). This happening probably influenced the Termal Sources around the whole area. --- Parrano water sources are located in the Bagno Minerale area, at the end of the ditch. They are hypo-termal mineral waters, rich of mineral elements and they have a temeprature of 26,5°C degrees. The Bagno ditch was caused by water erosion.
TANE DEL DIAVOLO - It is the name given to the caves complex along the whole Bagno ditch.
Inferior Main Cave
This is the closest cave to the water level. Visitors can reach it through a long and steep path, from the left side of the ditch, after fording it. It has a large entrance (20 mts high) facing the highest natural arch, called "Ponte del Diavolo". It developes through many large and small rooms. Once overpassed the "Ponte del Diavolo", visitors should climg a narrow channel which leads to a small floor where one of the four entrances is. Once entered, you can admire a circular area, enlighted by the second entrance natural light. From here visitors can enter the main cave with many leveles and rooms. On the cave's walls there are several Parrano inhabitants signatures, some are dated back Seventeenth Century.
Tana del Faggio - Beech Tree Cave
This is the most difficult cave to be visited: the entrance can be only reached by climbing the steep walls. The cave is over one of the three natural stone arches, 4 mts high over the water stream. It's kind of a high breech with a tall and thin beech tree. From the entrance visitors can pass through a long corridor which leads to a narrow area. After this, visitors reach the real cave, the largest and most complex one in the whole cave's complex. Guided Visits - € 21,00 - Info: +39.338.9613079
